Its been an hour since the sun came out. Yet the clouds owned the sky. Their breaths were the only impression in otherwise invisible world. Tea mugs warmed fingers lightly. The excitement of being away from everybody else's prying ears was too much to be bothered from biting wind. Or the icy floor. Both were at peace on the rooftop. Enjoying the early hours of the day. Everything bathed in fog. They could hardly see the park right across the road. Even that could not persuade them to leave. The couple wanted to seize one more minute with each other before entering the craziness of their worlds. Each passing moment was precious, much earned and well spent on that rooftop. They were silent. There was no need of words as the fog engulfed them. Separating the two silhouettes from the outside world. Her universe was breathing beside her. Warming her insides. What could be better than having him all to herself. No beeping phones to distract him. It was a paradox. The time seized to exist When they were together. And yet it felt like sand was quickly slipping from the hand. The magic seemed to take them in different dimension altogether.
Noorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15909166828158971623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157274140320071178.post-7044556821204000182023-01-01T14:48:00.007+05:002023-01-01T14:48:37.648+05:00Mother Bear

How A female bear nurtures her cubs? They are born in hibernation. This duration is five months long; from November to April. There is no food stored beforehand. As its snow all around them, she can't go out and leave the infants alone. She breastfeeds them even though she hasn't eaten for days even months. Yet she nurtures them with all she can muster. We would question; how does she feed them then? God has designed her biologicalsystem in such a wonderful way that her body fat melts and turns into milk for the newborns. For five months she feeds them and stays in the cave with her babies.

Spring comes. The snow melts into rivers. Mother bear comes out of the cave with her babies. They have to climb down the steep cliff. It is very tough for the li'l ones. Yet it is inherent in them to follow the footsteps of their mother. They step where mother left the mark. She keeps looking back to ensure they are coming behind her. The family climbs down successfully.

The streams are full of fish. Curious babies hobble near to them. But they have no clue what to do. The mother fishes and feeds them one by one. She is starving herself, yet, eats only when she has ensured that the babies are full. This is where she also protects them from father as the patriarch tends to eat his own offspring.

When babies have learned to protect and feed themselves, the mother is satisfied enough to leave them in the jungle and moves on. She has done a good job in raising them. The cubs will grow into strong bears and live how their mother taught them. And the cycle will continue.

These are precious lessons that can be incorporated in our lives. Yes, we must learn from nature. Today, we question: why should only a mother look after children? We talk about sharing the burden. We talk about equality. Im not denying the fact that fathers have no role to play in children's upbringing or they should not play their part. What I mean is a father cannot replace a mother's role. God has made everything unique. Everybody in this world is born with a responsibility or a key role to play. If we deny/ignore it then the balance tips and everything crumbles down. Likewise, mothers have special role in the universe. They are formidable. They have strengths one just cannot comprehend. Motherhood is astounding. Woman's mind remodels itself when she becomes a mother. Its instinctual to mothers to protect the young from possible dangers. And the rewiring gives her a sixth sense to feel the danger before it presents itself. It cannot surpass any power in this world. When a mother truly realizes her power and utilizes it, she has done wonders in this world. There are many examples. Powerful individuals came from strong mothers.

In her review of the psychological mechanisms of motherhood, Rebecca M. Fischer, a student researcher at the University of Richmond, found that mothers are “biologically driven to protect, care for and motivate their children to succeed.”

George Washington apocryphally observed that “all I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”

“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.” – Abraham Lincoln

"My mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.’ Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso."—Pablo Picasso

"My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors." – Maya Angelou

The deep lessons a mother bear teaches to us humans cannot be ignored. Her intelligence and patience while rearing her Cubs in the jungle must be taken into account especially in today's world where child rearing has become a great challenge for parents.
Noorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15909166828158971623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157274140320071178.post-40469150810350612272022-12-29T14:11:00.001+05:002022-12-29T14:11:44.085+05:00How To Break Writing Ice
I started getting a lot of notifications of related articles ever since I took content writing/Freelancing course. I used to open all of them and read what they have got to say.

I got tired.

There is so much advice on writing great blog posts on internet that one feels intimidated by the task. The simple writing becomes ominous because of the constant barge of Google's smart notifications on: How to start earning six figures; how this freelancer started getting more clients; etc.. It just wears you down. You are afraid of looking at the blank screen. Instead of that advice helping you to get started, it hinders you from writing at all.

How to avoid that intimidation?

I wanted to write without being burdened by constant guidelines on internet. I decided to shut off all the pings I was getting from Google and other sources and stared at blank screen.

What I really wanted?

I want to put my unique voice out there. The voice that will make the difference in the world.

There are so many topics to explore. There are many fields which you are not expert at and then there are some mundane things at which you are a pro. So what I suggest and what I did is I simply started writing about what I do and what is true to myself without getting into technical stuff, without getting into its expert advice. Writing about my experiences and about the things which will help people to add value to their lives. Helping them to get to know life more closely.

It really helped me. I plan to continue doing it as a beginner until I have my portfolio. I hope this advice doesn't burden you. I hope it helps you to get started. Link to your own self is more important than being expert, or writing about the thing which doesn't come from within you. It sounds artificial even to the reader however expert advice you have, however technical stuff you put out in the world but if it's not coming from within you, from your core, you cannot help the Reader to achieve the target which was the reason of them to read your article.

Start small.

Give yourself achievable targets.

Consistency is the key to writing.

The more you write, the more you gain experience. It comes slow. But it will last longer. Your posts will not be a burst of an inspiration but a steady flow of hard work which will get you very far on the writing road.

Don't look at people who are earning in six figures. You will get demotivated. It took them years to reach to that point. Give yourself time to grow and one day you will also be there. But until then, keep doing your thing.

In the meantime, learn/polish your skills. Take criticism with open mind and evaluate your pieces. Have somebody who can give you constructive feedback.

Invest in yourself. This investment will be your revenue one day.

You will connect to your readers. Which is your aim, right?

Ooops, did this post turn into advisory content?

Ciao!
Noorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15909166828158971623noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4157274140320071178.post-42781219064631280702022-12-29T14:02:00.001+05:002022-12-29T14:02:12.620+05:00How To Teach Toddlers Self Writing
Every step in toddler's life is a giant leap towards self reliance. The toddlers go through an array of emotions from excitement to fear to anxiety. It is quite natural to feel this way.

On one hand self reliance is good and ensures their independence more. While On other hand the little angels are afraid to let go of your gentle arms. They want to stay a little longer but that cannot be the case.

The transition should be made smooth for the innocent souls so they are happy about it and not anxious to get it done.

My elder son is 5 years old and he can write himself. I was quite anxious that how my 4 year old, who still acts like a baby, would learn to write himself. The thought of teaching him made me tense. I was afraid that how I would achieve it.

I feel this is a crucial moment in Talal's life. It's a big step towards self independence. He is afraid of writing himself as he is used to of holding my hand while tracing the patterns. A hack came to my mind to help myself and Talal to make self writing easy and fun.

I wrote a letter on blackboard and asked him to trace it with his finger and then write on the shadow of the letter left from his finger. The experiment was successful and he got on with it. He still asks me to hold his hand sometimes and I oblige so that he doesn't feel that he lost something suddenly.

As I said, I want to make it smooth for him so I play along with him. After 2 to three times tracing it with him, I ask him to do it himself. He can write a lot of letters now using this technique. Then I moved on to number writing and he has achieved this milestone as well.

Now I can surely say that with the success of this exercise you can teach your toddler to write herself. I felt quite proud of myself that this technique came to my mind and I was able to help him achieve this landmark. I feel so happy when he writes a letter and shows me.

How did you help your child learn writing. Please share your tips in the comments.

We have a saying in Urdu, "ایک چپ سو کو ہراتی ہے۔"

I had always been a person who believed to retort back in same way if someone criticize negatively. OK, and I have been kind of a person who never had to hear any criticism from anybody at all. In fact my khala used to say, "be a little tough or else people would take advantage of you." And that's what happened. I didn't know what was going on at first because I never imagined it would happen
to me. But a lot of things happened. With bitter experiences I learned to stay quiet. I used to hate myself for being quiet and took it as my weakness. But then I read a hadith narrated by Hazrat Anas (razi Allahu Anhu) سب سے بڑی نیکی خاموش رہنا ہے۔. And since then I have made it my lethal weapon.

We take silence for granted. We take God's delay as affirmation to our actions. We are so full of ourselves in our heads that we don't give a damn about anything. But God has His own ways of showing who is the real boss. We think we are weak if we back off. We take aggression as triumph. But that is not always the case.The silence is the difference between aggressor and victim. Sometimes we need to step off. Sometimes we need to just let the dogs bark and carry on. And believe me, that silence provides such a pedestal that you gain upper hand in the situation. You get to call the shots because you are the one who is in control. The one who opened his mouth lost the battle. I learned this technique the hard way. But I am happy that I gave it a chance. It is not a weakness in slightest, no matter what the devil says. It is the power few enjoy.

You don't get to regret later on what you said in the heat of the argument. Literally, people lose sleep over what they say in anger and later on justify (read lie) what they said. And again you stay quiet to let them simmer in their own hate and vengeance.

Ever since I learned the following quote, my attitude has changed. My stance has become more powerful.

"They say that when you give somebody a gift and they don't take it, where does it go? Back to you. The same way if someone insults you and you don't take it then it goes back to that person." (Quote unknown)

Isn't it an intelligent synthesis? I love it.

It was a post on Facebook about bush fire in Australia and how to protect children from watching TV as its traumatic for children. A person commented "but you cn't shield them from the world and raise them ignorant." She didn't mean to make the kids watch news or talk to them purposefully about it. I agree with her. Ever since I have read about end of times, I have always wondered how would I prepare my kids about it. How much should I convey to them in what ways? Because that is something related to nurturing the right values from the very start. also the signs are beginning to show rapidly. Everythings is on our fingertips, our children's too. So they have to be educated about it so that they don't fall prey to these factors.

Frankly, I was taken aback by the book and what it had to offer. It was well-written, researched yet radical in some way. May be for me. Because I had no prior knowledege. I was consumed byt this world. listening to songs on radio, Earphones plugged in my ears; 'I was enjoying' my life. After reading that book, I had to pause and reflect what am I doing. Where am I going. Things needed to be changed on my account in order to make my life according to the teachings of Islam. As I have already said that the end of times' incidents are related to our careful nurturing. I had that but I wasn't told it would be that stark. I was ignorant somehow. Unaware of what is coming. And that, it is coming really fast. And may be one day we would wake up and life would be change. And life is changing drastically. The things we are witnessing in our world, in our country are such that we had never imagined the world is so black and animalist.

How should I raise my children accordingly. How to shield them from evils of society and yet they have to move in that society. They will have to travel all over the world, watcheng with their own eyes the good and bad. I read somewhere, if a mother fervently desires and prays for her children to be save from the evils of this world then Allah doesn't let go that fervor in vain and save her children.

The consciousness of God in heart is the best yet difficult solution for living in this world. If the heart is subjected to God, then the person would survive no matter what may come. Yet we must pray that we don't get to go through that test as it would be the most difficult test of the humanity since Adam (may peace and blessings be upon him). Every Prophet warned his people and feared of The Test of End of Times.

May God protect us and our offspring from the difficulties of Time and may we meet our end in the Bliss of Eman.

The basic premise of all leaders which were included in

listening to the time and the need of their people. Whenever we start
practicing this golden rule we will be able to achieve our goals as a nation.
And once again rise to the top where we have been in the past. As Quran says,
“Allah ki rassi ko mazbuti se thaam lo or firqa firqa na ho jao.” That rassi is
Quran. And Iqbal says, “harm-e-pak bhe, Allah bhe, quran bhe ek; kuch bari baat
the jo hoty musalman bhe ek.” And if we continue reading ahead we find that our
condition is solely our fault. We have forgotten who we are. Where we come
from. And that is why we don’t know where to go. Our youth is confused and
dismal over current situation so they drown themselves in trivial stuff so that
they don’t have to deal with this confusion. Our responsibility is to show them
the way. Like our forefathers did for us.

He said I am confused about my direction. He left me questioning myself and my ideas. I asked him to specify but he changed the subject so I have to figure it out on my own. He is right to think that way. I don't judge his judgement. But I know that there's lack of understanding in this statement. It's okay. I will not explain myself because its of no use.

I have things on my mind but that is not enough. One has to have time and presence of mind to turn those ideas into actions. Yes I am always talking (to myself about doing this and that) but its all talking and he doesn't see any thing substantial so he is right in a way.

But who is going to change it. When am I going to have 'enough' time to have my ideas come true. Nobody tells me that.

What did I want to say? Why did I come here? I just wanted to let it out to keep me going I guess. It gets quite strenuous to keep your mouth shut for hours on end. I have been reading a lot these days. But I can either read or write in a day. How should I time my time in order to get important things done. There is a lot behind the facade if anybody is interested to at least bother.

It also makes me think that is why in old times, in our culture, women were discouraged to have ambition. Because there is no time for it literally. When a woman has to do every chore on her own then there's little time left and that should be dedicated to taking rest (begrudgingly- on the part of those who idealized women that way). So the women never took up any ambition just because of the simple reason. They were kept so much busy in the day-to-day normal chores that they won't have any ideas about well, ambition. How many times have I used this word. I apologize for that. Anyway, so what should be done about that.

How to break that vicious cycle while living in this mindset.

Women should uplift women. That is the only way, in my opinion, to move forward. If I help somebody to realize their ideas then somebody would help me in another to continue my work. It's a cycle we must start in order to turn ideas into reality.

But then nobody gives damn about what you think and how you want to function and the good ideas die slowly their own death.

I am usually rude, mean, angry and moody with the kids. I take out my frustrations on them fully aware that I shouldn't be doing it but carrying on anyway after holding it inside me longer than necessary. Lately I have been trying to be patient with the kids. I see this transformation in my three year old as well. With me, he is also trying to control himself. Even going a step ahead by offering compassion to me. He surprises me. With Winter around the corner, I insist on eating everything warm (read hot). "It's medicine when taken warmer." I tell them. And they both accept it grumping about. So my three old had his egg and I didn't, I didn't feel like eating it. He saw it and came to me; "You didn't eat it? Meine bhe khal lia, affan ne bhe kha lia. Ap thanda khaengi to tabyat kharab ho jaegi. Phir mein apko dawayi nahin dunga." And my heart burst with I don't know what not. Yes, I become cruel and tell them that if they wet their clothes or hands too much then they'll fall sick and I will not give them medicine. It works wonders. Believe me. Three year old literally shakes when his clothes get wet while he washes his face. And I then soothe him its okay. We'll get it change. He is funny. He'd think his mother is bipolar or something.

The second chapter of Aazadi book is about the first stage of active struggle of Muslims. This period is from 1886-1906 Syed's personality in that period towers over others. This stage is twenty year long and all of these years are brimming with Syed's efforts.

His efforts are defined beautifully by Iqbal that his ideas were so huge that they needed several generations to gradually unfold and reveal their consequences. The society free of want and poverty was the only goal behind every effort of Syed and it is unfolding even now after more than a hundred years.

He introduced the everlasting good which was in fact the soul of all human beings and which was going to be the centre of attention of our ancestors. All of their efforts revolve around her.

This period gave us the manifestation of consensus also. Canada
came into being through dialogue and. Nobody imagined that, especially Britishers, after more than 50 years another state would come into being.

Syed and the group decided to start a nationwide system of
education. People from all tehsils would meet once a year and discuss the
progress in education sector. They would exchange ideas and correct each other
wherever necessary. Mohammadan Educational Confrence came into being and
nationwide struggle purely for education started. The mullah of that time went
against Syed that he is spreading English education and that he is against Islam. Syed begged them that they should start this reform. And he, Syed
would just perform as a clerk. He wouldn’t even be included in the curriculum
designing. But this reform should be put into action immediately as there was dire need of educating the Muslim masses. It was a blunder that Syed was not made part of curriculum. It was more than a blunder, rather a crime against humanity. Those few who had interest benefited from Syed; others just went in different direction and even caused harm to the idea of Pakistan later.

Syed was vehemently against Muslims going into politics at
that time. He said that the Muslims should acquire first class education then
they should enter politics.

There are also some false prepositions spread against Syed, which should be clarified, given his stature in history and his services.

First; education was the means to an end and not an end in itself. It was a step towards eradicating the poverty. We should understand it that what he did was actually what the people of that time wanted. He merely voiced their needs. He didn't force his ideas on them. He respected their vision and worked hard to realize it. Actually it is hard to swallow for us because we have never respected our people like our ancestors did. We never married that bride who was the soul of all human beings and so we are ignorant of our own people. Of our own self.

Second; building a college was his individual say. The reader come to the conclusion on their own that again he respected the masses.

Third is a criminal lie; he was in favor of modern education. If he was then why would he go at length in creating the Muslim Education Conference, Muslim gatherings where education which is true to Muslim genius is imparted. Mir Hassan, Shamsul Ulema, was his staunch disciple, and Iqbal was his disciple. We should give the man the due credit he deserves. We are just wandering in dark just because we don't want to see the light. Because we are afraid of the light. We don't want it. It doesn't mean it would disappear or diminish.

There were many English education schools and colleges. They didn't have to go through the pain of
building another one if they wanted to impart Modern education. And we should keep that in mind that it was HE who pointed out the major factor that this modern edcuation is highly biased and creating hate amongst Muslims and Hindus.

There is a lot discussed in the book. You should check it out. I think the review got too long but I got carried away. :D You should check this link in Urdu also. It provides deeper and beautiful version.

Congress even had voices in British Parliament which spoke on their behalf; ruling Muslims totally out of mainstream. As a result, common English person didn't know which minorities existed in sub-continent and what was their stance. In this backdrop, they were unaware of Muslims' struggles and how they were subjugated. And so they were in favor of United India.

Also, it was (and also today) falsely believed that British wanted to create Pakistan. It is one of the greatest lies of history. Quaid-e-Azam made it a point in many of his speeches that "it was the common man who came first. You (educated people) came later" [for Pakistan Movement]. It is also discussed in detail in Mr. Khurram Ali Shafique's new book, Aazadi (urdu) that how Muslim League and the common people of sub-continent made Pakistan true. And even now how Muslim League is spiritually guiding South Asia. It is a different kind of history book, one which should be taught in every school.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here the interview ends. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Is it just me or do you also feel the pride of Quaid-e-Azam in this cause? How unapologetic he is towards his people's stance. Unlike our mainstream leaders or media which are always ready to do away with Pakistan at a slight hint. His sheer belief in freedom of sub-continent and the people makes this Movement more romantic. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It provides a clear sight in Quaid-e-Azam's personality and this movement. It also shows that through dialogue, anybody would come to the only logical conclusion of the necessity of Pakistan. It is just the matter of seeing it with unbiased vision.

What did you think about this interview and what hindsight would you provide? I would love to hear from you, dear reader. It is time we make ourselves strong and do away with whatever shackles we are bound with. We need to feel confident about our legacy and ancestors in order to move towards more liberal age.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Aazadi book lays down the journey of freedom from slavery and foreign rule. This book breaks so many idols and brings out shocking facts, yes facts which were literally erased from our books, minds, hearts. It rightly claims that if only we accept what is presented in this book we will have our legacy again., and it is not a mere wish of the author but what our hailed ancestors struggled and lived for.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Where do we come from? Why did we come out of India? How did it happen and many more likely questions are answered in this book.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is usually wrongly believed that there was mutual hate among Muslims, Hindus and Britishers and thats how Pakistan came into being.
/><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The author discusses this lie which is fed especially to young Muslim of Pakistan. The hate was not mutual. Neither it always existed. Hindus and Muslims lived peacefully in Muslim Empire. Muslim Emperors went out of their ways to keep the peace for Hindus and not make them feel they were ruled by foreigners. Our ancestor, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan inferred that the hate was carefully sown in the hearts of educated Hindus by Britishers. The curriculum in schools was designed in a way that it instilled hate, resentment in young Hindu mind. The translated history books were biased intentionally or unintentionally to reduce the stature of Muslims in the hearts of Hindus. So When they, (the Hindus) came into power, wanted to test what they had learned all their lives. There was nobody, not even Muslims (educated enough- ironically) to remind them of the love and unity they enjoyed for so many centuries. What Hindu remembered was the (false) cruelty of Aurangzeb.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">is not very complicated. By the Afghans. Just that. We are a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">brave and united people who are prepared to work and, if neces-
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">sary, fight. So how does the question of defence present any
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">peculiar difficulties? In what way do we differ from other
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">nations? From Iran, for example? Obviously, there will have to
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">be a transition period. We are not asking the British to quit India
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">overnight. The British have helped to make this gigantic muddle,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and they must stay and help to clear it up. But before they can
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">do that, they will have to do a lot of hard thinking. And that
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">reminds me I have something I would like to show you.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He excused himself and left the room. I lit a cigarette and
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">waited. And suddenly I realized that something very remarkable
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">was happening, or rather was not happening. I was not losing my
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">temper. Jinnah had been almost brutally critical of British policy
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">(though I have not quoted his remarks in the above dialogue),
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">but his criticism had been clear and creative. It was not merely
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">a medley of wild words, a hotchpotch of hatred and hallucination,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">in the Hindu manner. It was more like a diagnosis. The difference
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">between Jinnah and the typical Hindu politician was the difference between a surgeon and a witch doctor. Moreover, he was a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">surgeon you could trust, even though his verdict was harsh.'The British must realize,' he had said to me before we tackled
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">the problem of Pakistan, 'that they have not a friend in the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">country. Not a friend.'
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A Hindu politician would have said that at the top of his voice,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">with delight. Jinnah said it quietly, with regret. Here he was
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">again. In his hand he carried a book.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: You will remember I said, a moment ago, that the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">British would have to do a lot of hard thinking. It's a habit they
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">don't find very congenial; they prefer to be comfortable, to wait
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and see, trusting that everything will come right in the end. How-
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ever, when they do take the trouble to think, they think as clearly
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and creatively as any people in the world. And one of their best
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">thinkers at least on the Indian problem was old John Bright.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Have you ever read any of his speeches?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): Not since I left school.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: Well, take a look at this. I found it by chance the other
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">day.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He handed me the book. It was a faded old volume, The Speeches
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">of John Bright, and the date of the page at which it was opened
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">was June 4th, 1858. This is what the greatest orator in the House .
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">of Commons said on that occasion:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">'How long does England propose to govern India? Nobody can answer
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">that question. But be it 50 or 100 or 500 years, does any man with the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">smallest glimmering of common sense believe that so great a country, with
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">its 20 different nationalities and its 20 different languages, can ever be
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">bound up and consolidated into one compact and enduring empire confine?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I believe such a thing to be utterly impossible.'
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I handed back the book.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: What Bright said then is true to-day ... In fact, it's far
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">more true though, of course, the emphasis is not so much on the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">20 nationalities as on the 2 ... the Muslim and the Hindu. And
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">why is it more true? Why hasn't time brought us together? Be-
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">cause the Muslims are awake . . . because they've learnt, through
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">bitter experience, the sort of treatment they may expect from the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hindus in a 'United India'. A 'United India' means a Hindu-dominated India. It means that and nothing else. Any other
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">meaning you attempt to impose on it is mythical. 'India is a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">British creation ... it is merely a single administrative unit
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">governed by a bureaucracy under the sanction of the sword.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">That is all. It is a paper creation, it has no basis in flesh and blood.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

There are a few more questions left. I'll post them later. I'll wait for your feedback.

You can read previous parts here and here . Beverly Nichols interviewed Quaid-e-Azam in 1943 and included it in his book "Verdict On India". He was quite taken with Quaid's personality. Look how he describes him [Jinnah] in the chapter when he reached at his place to meet him.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

THE most important man in Asia is sixty-seven, tall, thin, and
elegant, with a monocle on a grey silk cord, and a stiff white collar
which he wears in the hottest weather. [...]
I have called Mr. Jinnah 'the most important man in Asia

That was to ensure that you kept him spotlit in your mind. Like
all superlatives the description is open to argument, but it is not
really so far from the truth. India is likely to be the world's
greatest problem for some years to come, and Mr. Jinnah is in a
position of unique strategic importance. He can sway the battle
this way or that as he chooses.<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: [with a smile] What other questions have you got there?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): The first is economic. Are the Muslims likely to be richer
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">or poorer under Pakistan? And would you set up tariffs against
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">the rest of India?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: I'll ask you a question for a change. Supposing you
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">were asked which you would prefer ... a rich England under
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Germany or a poor England free, what would your answer be?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF: It's hardly necessary to say.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: Quite. Well, doesn't that make your question look a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">little shoddy? This great ideal rises far above mere questions of
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">personal comfort or temporary convenience. The Muslims are a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">tough people, lean and hardy. If Pakistan means that they will
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">have to be a little tougher, they will not complain. But why should it mean that?What conceivable reason is there to suppose
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">that the gift of nationality is going to be an economic liability? A
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">sovereign nation of a hundred million people even if they are
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">not immediately self-supporting and even if they are industrially
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">backward - is hardly likely to be in a worse economic position
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">than if its members are scattered and disorganized, under the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">dominance of two hundred and fifty million Hindus whose one
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">idea is to exploit them. How any European can get up and say
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">that Pakistan is 'economically impossible' after the Treaty of
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Versailles is really beyond my comprehension. The great brains
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">who cut Europe into a ridiculous patchwork of conflicting and
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">artificial boundaries are hardly the people to talk economics to us,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">particularly as our problem happens to be far simpler.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I have italicized one of my favorite phrases from this interview. I feel so proud whenever I read these lines. How eloquently Quaid put Pakistan's case. He was sure that neither he nor his people would back off from any problem in the way of Pakistan. He knew that these are just phases to further grow into a strong nation. And his people would go to any length to achieve their ideal.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It is a common notion that Quaid-e-Azam united Muslims of India but it is hardly ever acknowledged that the Muslims of India were an organic entity and it was growing on its own terms especially after 1857. This aspect is discussed in depth in my teacher's book "Azaadi" in which he describes painstakingly how Muslim Nation evolved and Pakistan came into being. I am by no means diminishing Quaid's role in freedom movement, no. What I mean to highlight is the Muslims of India had developed their intuition and they were growing onto that. Quaid himself always believed that the people had bestowed the power upon him and not vice versa. He acknowledged this principle number of times. For example, when he was proposing the 14 points for Muslim League he clearly conveyed that these are only suggestions based upon numerous meetings with different minority groups within India and it is unto these groups whether they accept them or reject them.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here, in below responses also, you will feel Quaid had an unwavering believe in Muslim nation and he wanted others to believe it also.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): How would you describe the 'vital principles' of Pakistan?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: In five words. The Muslims are a Nation. If you grant
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">that, and if you are an honest man, you must grant the principle
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">of Pakistan. You would have to grant it even if the obstacles were
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">a hundred times more formidable than they actually are. Of
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">course, if you do not grant it, 'then ... He shrugged his shoulders
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and smiled . . . Then, there is an end of the matter.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): When you say the Muslims are a Nation, are you thinking
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">in terms of religion?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: Partly, but by no means exclusively. You must remember that Islam is not merely a religious doctrine but a realistic and
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">practical Code of Conduct. I am thinking in terms of life, of
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">everything important in life. I am thinking in terms of our
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">history, our heroes, our art, our architecture, our music, our laws,
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">our jurisprudence . . .
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): Please, I would like to write these things down.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: (after a pause] In all these things our outlook is not only
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">fundamentally different but often radically antagonistic to the
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hindus. We are different beings. There is nothing in life which
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">links us together. Our names, our clothes, our foods- they are
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">all different; our economic life, our educational ideas, our treat-
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ment of women, our attitude to animals ... we challenge each
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">other at every point of the compass. Take one example, the eternal
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">question of the cow. We eat the cow, the Hindus worship it. A
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">lot of Englishmen imagine that this 'worship' is merely a pictur-
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">-esque convention, an historical survival. It is -nothing of the sort.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Only a few days ago, in this very city, the cow question became a
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">matter for the police. The Hindus were thrown into the greatest
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">agitation because cows were being killed in public. But the cow
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">question is only one of a thousand. (A pause) What have you
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">written down?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): I have only written 'The Muslims are a Nation'.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: And do you believe it?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">SELF(BN): I do.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There is also an answer to the strife where 'liberals' say Quaid wanted a secular Pakistan. He was a true liberal and it clearly shows in his response. He understood Islam well and knew that this is the only answer to every question. It is a way of life, simply. Everything is engraved in this principle. It does not bound you to the specific notion rather it opens several paths for whoever adheres to it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My teacher Khurram Ali Shafique sahab recommended me a book, "Verdict On India". There was a chapter in which the writer, Beverly Nichols interviewed Jinnah in 1943. Though Jinnah promised to give him just half an hour but they actually talked for three hours, concerning matters of wide range. This post is part of a series where I am going to break down this interview into smaller posts for effective reading.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What I found profound about this interview is the stature of Quaid-e-Azam. The power in his answers is almost tangible. You can feel the strength of his argument and relive the faith which the Muslims of that time felt when they were in Quaid's presence.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Its also amusing (for me) that this interview is sort of an elder is admonishing a child of stupid behavior. Or may be Pakistan has been so much a reality for us that we almost (mentally) accuse different nations of not seeing it so. May be every national feels the same for their country which we feel for Pakistan.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Anyway, here's the first question from Nichols to Jinnah.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Beverly Nichols: <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The most common accusation of your critics is that you
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">have not defined Pakistan with sufficient precision that there
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">aren't any details of defense, economics, minorities, etc., which you
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">have left deliberately vague. Do you think that is a just criticism?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">JINNAH: <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It is neither just nor intelligent, particularly if it is made
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">by an Englishman with any knowledge of his own history. When
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Ireland was separated from Britain, the document embodying the
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">terms of separation was approximately ten lines. Ten lines of print
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">to settle a dispute of incredible complexity which has poisoned
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">British politics for* centuries! All the details were left to the
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Future and the Future is often an admirable arbitrator. Well,
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I've already given the world a good deal more than ten lines to
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">indicate the principles and practice of Pakistan, but it is beyond
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">the power of any man to provide, in advance, a blue-print in
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">which every detail is settled. Besides, Indian history proves that
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">such a blue-print is totally unnecessary. Where was the blue-print
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">when the question of Burmah's separation was decided at the
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Round Table Conference? Where was the blue-print when Sind
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">was separated from Bombay? The answer, of course, is 'nowhere'.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It didn't exist. It didn't need to exist. The vital point was that
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">the principle of separation was accepted; the rest followed
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">automatically.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Jinnah had always emphasized that the system of Pakistan will be according to the jurisprudence taken from the Quran and Sunnah. He talked about rights of poor people, strong character, education, equal laws for rich and poor. He envisioned a just society where there will be nobody deprived of all the good God has bestowed upon this world. He entrusted this land to its people and he was sure that they will carve out their way as the need will be.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I will post the next question in a few days. Please provide your feedback on this part.

I'm a mother of two toddlers (boys). Elder 4 and younger 3. full stop yes. Hahahhaha! I want a daughter very much but I don't ask Him. I don't know what's the wisdom behind gifting me with two boys when I really wanted a daughter and I prayed at that time. Was even disappointed when nurse announced what is it. Hahahhaha! couldn't help it. They are my life though. They are so cute and innocent and nerve wrecking hurricane. I love them.

Affan goes to a school. He's in nursery. He asks me daily if tomorrow is off and I say no. Today he woke up before me and asked the same question. He was angry and lied down again, pretending to sleep. I told him to get up but he didn't budge. He immediately got up when I said come on, I'll carry you to the washroom. They both make me smile in odd situations.

Like few days back, Talal was in washroom. I don't remember exactly, I think he had leaked potty in his pajamas and I was furious. He has a way of appeasing me; he scrunches his face and grins till I smile. No matter how much I try to hold up I just lose it. I doubled up laughing my head off. Imagine him sitting on a commode grinning wildly.

Can't elders be the same. Just let it go and smile. Take everything easy. Why non matters matter and the matter is ignored? Why are we all so serious and grim and full of hate. What does it give except more hate and illnesses. Why don't we just relax and behave like Talal or other billion kids.

A few days ago I was very disturbed. I was trying to find the reason behind the dilemma I was in - like always. Not questioning His plan or Power; just curious about the Wisdom of it.

Last night when going to bed I recited the last ayahs of surah baqarah and there was my answer. And I was immediately calmed by the thought that He doesn't burden a soul beyond their capacity so no matter what is the Wisdom or Reason behind the situation He Knows I can handle it. And that was the last thought I had before I fell asleep.

Allah tala is truly truly Wise. and He shows it to us every now and then. How Wisely He takes His slave a step further towards Himself. Makes us trust Him by reassuring us through His Words (Quran) that He Knows and He listens and cares and plans best.

If we ponder upon this ayah, "He doesn't burden a soul beyond its capacity" we get a picture of a strong character. The slave knows that he is capable of handling this situation since allah says it. So he stays patient and keeps calling upon Allah, greatfully, lovingly knowing His plan is perfect.

Then Allah says, "with every hardship, comes ease" and He says it twice to etch it in our hearts that there must be some ease. and sure enough we find solace, ease when we change our way of thinking. We change our perspective on our life. We begin to appreciate what we have and strive for abundance. This way Allah makes us grateful for the things we have in our lives meanwhile steering our thoughts away from our worries and negativity. Our hearts find peace just as He promised, "Verily In Our Remembrance do hearts find ease".

I made a new friend. We met at the ninth batch of our online course Introduction to Iqbal Studies and instantly hit it off.
She is from Kashmir and that is one of the major reason
of writing this post.

Whenever we end our conversations she always asks me to say her salam to everybody, and that means Everybody! I find it endearing. Nobody has ever made such a request of me. First I was shy, as to how to give her salam to the people in Pakistan but then the idea of writing this post, in order to honor her wish and to tell the world about her, came to me. Therefore, first and foremost; Salam/Peace to you, dear reader, from the valleys of Kashmir.

The most touching idea about this exchange for me is; she cares about us, Pakistanis. It brims my heart with so much joy and love, my heart expands and is ready to burst out with happiness. I could never know that somebody could love selflessly. For I have always heard people telling us that Kashmiris no longer like Pakistan, that we have failed them. This was excruciating for me to even imagine that they'd ever hate us or be despaired of Pakistan. Communicating with her sews my heart back to the hope that perhaps we have not lost all the battles, perhaps there is still chance to win them back and somebody from that sacred valley thinks about us in a good way and to this extent. Words fail me when I try to explain what this news do to me. I'd like to be her friend even after we are dead. For it would be an inconsolable loss to lose her for eternity.

I hope we go on loving each other for the sake of Allah. May we help each other in whichever way we can and we have more ways to communicate than just via internet. I pray that He blesses her and everybody in the troubled valley and provide them with Peace and Serenity. May her silent prayers be answered. May her wish for Peace rings throughout the world.

I pray she finds joy in her life.

Ameen!
The 9th batch of Introduction to Iqbal Studies started this month and I am co-facilitating it with my honorable teacher Mr. Khurram Ali Shafique.

This post is about my long journey at Marghdeen Learning Centre; first as a participant and then actively working for it. Interestingly, I was in the first batch of Introduction to Iqbal Studies in June 2011 when it all started. and at that time I had never imagined that I will be one day assisting my teacher run this very course.

I remember how I felt when I started studying at MLC. It was the first time I took up virtual learning seriously [apart from my Spanish online lessons]. I was skeptic of some of the ideas presented in the lessons but our teacher was ever so patient and led me to the point where I became devoted to that very idea, the city of Marghdeen. Looking back at myself in my fresh year I was unrelenting, rigid and well, naïve. Running this course with my teacher is proving to be so healthy, spiritually! It feels so good to remind myself from where I come from, to trace back my progress, the point where it all started for me. It makes me realize [actually it hit me very hard] how far I have come and the things I gained in this journey. I have been very shy initially and used to communicate very little with other participants. But now, most of them are my friends. And one man made it all possible; my teacher Mr. Khurram Ali Shafique, whom I will always be grateful for. He had been a very good example of compassion, perseverance, patience and love which is not very common in today's teachers.

The thing I like about learners is their enthusiasm and fresh curiosity. I get to learn so much from the present group. They remind me of me. They are adorable. [some are older than me but that doesn't matter. They probably don't know how young I am.]. I want them to have what I had from this course which made it impossible for me to go back to my old ways. I want them to feel the real essence of education, the things which should be learned and taught, not the rote-learning and cramming of unrelated knowledge which is the hallmark of our education system. The spiritual fulfillment, the dynamics of science, arts, politics, education; the applicability of Dr. Iqbal's ideas, the sacred nature of human being, are few of many ideas which I learned from these courses. And there are many things which are yet to be studied.

Indeed, the frustration from our education system made me realize how badly we need the kind of education which is imparted at MLC. And I cannot wait for it to be a prestigious university. I am not afraid to claim that no institute can vie with MLC in respect of discernment of knowledge and excellent quality of education, the real education which is necessary for all of us regardless of our background.

I hope that this journey never ends. And may I accomplish what I desire.

The mind of Goethe,
The heart of Rumi,
The message of the Quran.
This was the unparalleled legacy of the poet-philosopher credited with birthing a nation and a state, and at no other time has the world been more ready to embrace his ideas than it is right now.

The story of his mind, and what he taught, as told herein from a new and compelling angle, leads us on a trail of discovery towards a new way of life. You're invited to approach this as a handbook for implementing his life-giving ideas.
The above-quoted blurb reflects the spirit in which my new book, Iqbal: His Life and Our Times, is being offered. The book is a tribute to Iqbal by ten sovereign states, since it is being published jointly by Iqbal Academy Pakistan and the Cultural Institute of the Economic Cooperation Organization, which is the successor organization of the RCD and now includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The international edition is being brought out by Libredux, UK, on behalf of the original publishers. It will be available from Thursday, May 8.

It can be ordered from the page on the Createspace Website. It will also be available on other websites, including Amazon. The Pakistani edition is hopefully coming out by the end of this month.

Much has been written about Iqbal but this book may turn out to be different (even from my earlier writings) because it presents Iqbal with a special focus on how his ideas can be implemented today - especially in Pakistan and the Muslim world, but also elsewhere - by individuals as well as societies. I have kept it less than 200 pages, so that it may serve as a compact handbook.

Until the book comes out this Thursday, I offer you following introduction written by two people for whom I have deep respect and gratitude.

Introduction
by
Muhammad Suheyl Umar, Director, Iqbal Academy Pakistan;
and Iftikhar Arif, Director, ECO Cultural Institute (ECI)

Dr. Sir Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) is the only poet and thinker in the history of world literature who has been credited with the birth of a new nation and a new state. It is therefore very befitting that a handbook about his life and thought should be brought out by an organization comprising of ten member states. The Economic Cooperation Organization’s Cultural Institute (ECI) is pleased to bring out this publication jointly with Iqbal Academy Pakistan.

In addition to his unique status in Pakistan, Iqbal also happens to be either a national poet or a household inspiration in several other countries including Iran, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and India. In Turkey, his symbolic grave stands in the compound of the mausoleum of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi. In the universities of Heidelberg and Cambridge, there are chairs or fellowships in his name. Roads, buildings and monuments have been named after him in other countries too, including Mauritius.

Iqbal: His Life and Our Times fulfils the need for a simple and reliable introduction to the life and work of this unmatched genius, highlighting the practical relevance of his ideas for those who wish to consider them for implementation. The author, Khurram Ali Shafique, is well-known in the field of Iqbal Studies. The awards which he has received for his previous publications include the coveted Presidential Iqbal Award.

The present volume includes many findings that are the outcome of the author’s original research. Of special interest to the general readers as well as the experts would be the evidence, presented here for the first time, which establishes a historical connection between the political ideas of Iqbal, the American thinker Mary Parker Follett and the Bengali visionary C. R. Das.

We are hoping that this volume will offer much by way of looking at the present times from new avenues.

It is shown here that the views expressed by Iqbal in his poetry and prose formed a coherent system of thought, and the same was implemented by him through political and social action.

This is to dispel the myth which has been preventing a deeper understanding of Iqbal’s thought until now, i.e. the false but widely perpetuated assumption that the ideas presented by Iqbal were either inconsistent with each other or they kept undergoing such perpetual changes throughout his life that they cannot be considered for implementation in any other time.

The system of his thought and its underlying principles are being presented here, perhaps for the first time. It is also being shown that in spite of its inner coherence, the system of Iqbal’s thought kept pace with the evolution of the collective life of his community.

This evolution can be studied by dividing the intellectual life of the poet-philosopher into three stages: inquiry, discovery and transcendence. The duration of each stage has been established here on the basis of biographical and textual evidence, and the book has been divided into three chapters accordingly.

Each of these three stages started in his mental life when his community adopted a new goal collectively. The goals, their relevance to the world and humanity, their implications for Iqbal, and his contribution towards achieving them are issues which are being discussed here in a fresh light. This may turn out be one of the most significant contributions which this book will make to the subject.

If nations of the world desire to come closer in their hearts and minds, they cannot ignore to learn about the ideas, emotions and visions of each other. The Economic Cooperation Organization’s Cultural Institute (ECI), formed through a charter at the third summit meeting of the countries of ECO held at Islamabad in 1995, aims at fostering understanding and the preservation of the rich cultural heritage of its members through common projects in the field of the media, literature, art, philosophy, sport and education.

The present volume is being offered in line with this vision, and with the conviction that it is important for everybody to be informed about the ideas of Iqbal, since they may be counted among those cultural forces which have gone into shaping a significant part of our world.

This conviction is shared by Iqbal Academy Pakistan, a statutory body of the Government of Pakistan, originally established through an act of parliament in 1951 and reinforced through an ordinance in 1962. The aims and objectives of the Academy are to promote and disseminate the study and understanding of the works and teachings of Iqbal. The Academy has been translating its objectives into action and activity through a number of measures including publication programme, IT projects, outreach activities, Iqbal Award Programme, website, research and compilation, audio-video, multimedia, archive projects as well as exhibitions, conferences, seminars, projection abroad, research guidance, academic assistance, donations and library services.

We hope that the readers will benefit from the book which we are offering here jointly, and this will go a long way in achieving our common objectives.

However much I would like to punch Haqqani in the face, I will stick to just facts and teach him some history lessons which he studied long ago and which American shine and glam dazzled out of his brain.
"Haqqani said that Pakistan wouldn't be able to fight USA". Not that I want to go on war with any country or I am a jingoist. Nor do I hate US. Yes, I don't like her policies for her fellow countries and I have issues with that. I want the problems to be solved with as much peace as we can work out. We need to act like adults and spare the world of the nukes. Thank you.

I don't know what made Haqqani say that. May be the war paraphernalia US has been able to acquire in all these years, or the courage of her soldiers or determination of her generals, or the money they have or how they have always been invading/controlling the countries.

I will just talk about 'how' Haqqani is wrong in his claim.

Haqqani must remember that the great Alexander was defeated at the hands of a mere raja of Porus. Any middle school kid can tell him that. Napoleon Bonaparte's great army crashed in the snowfields of USSR. USSR had to fall out of Afghanistan after almost a decade of nerve-wrecking occupation of the poor country. Don't tell me that US helped Afghans to fight USSR. if that is so, then how Afghans managed to contain the US this time? Who is providing them the 'arms' and other required equipment to fight ten times a great power? US has no way of staying in Afghanistan even after the invasion of more than a decade. US has literally bomb-flattened the country yet they are compelled to just leave the place now. The war-torn country will pick up the pieces on its own. Like always.

He forgot Vietnam, may be? Or how Colonel Chavez held his ground even after a coup d'etat? Did Haqqani forget, say by chance, that Chavez was back on his seat after just a few hours of the coup which was pulled against him by US?

Or the most classical example, no, in fact anti-classical, Ghazwa-e-Badr where 313 men were pitting against the well armed 1000 men but still the former won?

Really? Haqqani has such a bad memory that he forgot all of his history lessons or is he such a spineless coward that he just crumpled under the technology US has been able to build?

Or does he under-estimate Pakistan to this extent? If that is the case, well I am offended big time! Our own ex-ambassador has so little integrity for his motherland. Aghast. And he insists that "this is the reality we have to accept". I think Haqqani needs to study a lot of history for sure. Or may be, he is following the defeatist mindset.

I am appalled that this kind of a man represented Pakistan in US. No wonder they don't hold us in high regard. They haven't met 'real men' of Pakistan.

oh by the way, he also should learn that it is not always about 'winning'. Its about honor. Whether you live or die, you do that with honor, integrity, dignity.

Is America really our enemy, What do you say?

“Nations are born in the heart of a poet, they prosper and die in the hands of a politician.” Stray Reflections.

Today we, the Pakistani nation, proudly boast of being the nation who
was born in the heart of one of the greatest poet of world history. Dr.
AllamaIqbal stands tall among the giants who go on living despite of
having ceased to exist in the world. Iqbal is one of those people who
personify the concept of immortality. After many decades of his death,
he still lives in many forms among us; through his written work, his
services, and his ideas. He is among those few people who are cherished
and owned equally by East and West and his work has been researched and
appraised by scholars around the world.

Today I am going to look into one of the many facets, which make him a
legend. I want us to remember why we need him now and what he has to
offer us in these trying times.
When I started studying AllamaIqbal, the thing that struck me most
was the grandeur he attributed to the human being. He exalts the
individual whose perfect culmination was in the Holy Prophet (peace be
upon him).

The human being is essentially good and powerful enough to take down
anything is his recurring theme. The fact that the person is capable of
almost anything is mind blowing. I have always seen how people are
treated on different levels in our society so it was very hard for me to
imagine the equality suggested by him in his different anecdotes. I was
awe-struck when a mere soldier
of a Muslim army pledged peace to a deadly enemy [being unaware that he
is the one they had to kill]. When his commander came to know about the
pledge, he immediately accepted it and forgave the enemy on account of
one of his soldiers.
Iqbal states that “man must be regarded as a unit of force, an
energy, a will, a germ of infinite power, the gradual unfoldment of
which must be the object of all human activity.”… The idea that the
human being is endowed with infinite power and he has so many courses
open to him, he can take whichever course he likes and make his life, is
so empowering and revitalizing. It is a perfect explanation of the
phenomenon mentioned in Quran, “And that there is not for man except
that [good] for which he strives.” Al-Quran [53:39]
He admits the flaws and limits in the human beings but he insists
and proves that despite of these defections the human was sent as a trustee
of God and that alone makes him special and trustworthy. There is also a
possibility [a strong one] that in the course of his life a man is
perfectly capable to get rid of the personality flaws or reduce them to
minimum level.

He had an incredible insight. For example he describes the
transgression of Adam in Lecture IV, in unique terms: Adam’s first
transgression was forgiven [he was not sent on Earth as a punishment
rather it’s a blessing and Earth is a dwelling place. But the point to
be noted is the value of the human being. “That God has taken this risk
shows His immense faith in man; it is for man now to justify this
faith.” Lecture III
The status Iqbal re-asserts in his poems for an individual, his
relation with his society and God was absolute opposite of what was/is
going on in the Muslim Community. Those poems changed a lot of
thought-processes in the community. The false humility and weak-spirit
garbed in virtuousness had to end. He wanted them to realize that the
fall of the Muslim empire was due to specific reasons and most of those
reasons were borne out of the Muslims’ attitude towards their own
lifestyle and thinking. The stagnation, dead spirit and most of all the
despicable character of later Muslims were among the many reasons of the
downfall. He reminded them that “it has always been Islam that saved
the Muslims in their difficult times and not the Muslims who saved the
Islam.” This implies that the Muslims need to come back to the spirit of
Islam which is absolutely anti-classical. The core messages of
equality, justice, freedom, self, selflessness, being true to one’s
faith were all but forgotten.

Even a verse from him is not short of a miracle. After reading him,
the person feels fresh. His/her vision shifts dynamically and he/she has
the urge to do something valuable, to add worth to life. And Iqbal’s
objective is exactly that; to make the person aware of their true
potential. In his paper, Islam as a Moral and Political Ideal, he
states: “Give man a keen sense of respect for his own personality, let
him move fearless and free in the immensity of God’s earth, and he will
respect the personalities of others and become perfectly virtuous.” The
strong individual is one of the fundamental reality in Iqbal’s world and
we cannot move ahead without giving it its due status in the society.
The importance given to the development of a strong individual is so
crucial for a healthy society that the interests of the existing
generation are sacrificed for the future generation. In the course of
time, we have neglected the individual and instead over-emphasized the
objects. In our world, which is a stark contrast to Iqbal’s world,
individuals are sacrificed in the name of law and order.
It is proven that when people took up Iqbal’s message and tried to
gain that spirit back they never failed. Agha Hashr Kashmiri and others
produced some top class literature and carved new ideals for the nation
which eventually helped them to go through the most difficult journey of
their life; Partition. For once, the whole nation was at one to dream
the collective future. Iqbal made them dream in daytime.

We are always looking down upon our triumphs and talk about our glory
wistfully, led to think as if we are never going to gain it back again.
What we need most today is that same confidence, attitude of winning
ourselves and the world, in short we need to come back to the voice of
Iqbal which beckons us towards the glory of humanity. He always insisted
that “will, not intellect” is essential principle for growth. His
message is not limited to a single area nor does it get old. It is as
fresh today, even after so many decades. He covers almost everything, as
if standing on the vintage point. He points the reader to the right
direction and motivates them to take the journey on their own just like
the Simorgh. He would not map out the whole journey for you;that is not
his style. Neither does he leave you stranded. He leaves the signs and
signals on the way to reassure the reader and means to test themselves
if they are on the right path.

We all wish for the change around us yearns for our country to prosper and unity of people but how many of us are ready to go through that change, sacrifice our personal interests, the petty/non-existential issues? Once again, Dr. Iqbal, our ideological father pointed out that “He
who desires to change an unfavourable environment must undergo a
complete transformation of his inner being.” [The Lahore Address] Isn’t
it unfair with Iqbal that we, his own people, are always ready to turn
our backs to him when he becomes inconvenient for us to carry forward?
When will we stop using him for our qawwalis, folk music and take him to
the platform of politics, education, literature, science, religion?
When will we start using him as our sword and shield against the
corporate, imperial, colonial monsters? We need to seriously think about
our priorities and walk the talk instead of just delivering the
monologues of how great Iqbal was or what he failed to deliver.
